Chapter 13
A hooded figure began to approach me. It looked like a Death Eater or even Voldemort himself from the Harry Potter books. I screeched with terror and started running in the opposite direction. All there was were walls surrounding me. Not curves, no turns, no secret doors.
I felt around in my sweater and found a mirror. I took it out and used it as a rear-view mirror. The hooded figure was gaining speed…and…he was flying! He was flying on a broom stick. I put a hand in the air and exclaimed, “Chimare Broom!”
A broom zoomed up to me and I jumped onto its body. I held on tightly to the handle and bent my head to gain speed. I put the mirror on the bottom of the body of the broomstick. I held it there, pointed at it and muttered, “Pegaro!”
A bright white light swirled around the mirror and the broomstick binding them together like glue. I released my hand and looked at the mirror. The hooded figure was coming closer. He drew out a stick and pointed it at me. I screamed some more.
The hooded figure began to speak. In his low, scary voice he said, “Matar-"

“Natalie! Nat! Wake up!”
“No…don’t kill me…Please…Spare me…Oh…” I moaned.
“Ugh, why did I just not stun her or something?” Bonnie said to herself. “NATALIE! I’ve been trying to wake you up for the past ten minutes!”
I gave a jolt. “What…?” I asked, starting to wake up. I lifted my head from my pillow. “What do you want Bon?” I asked, yawning.
“Uh, you’re going to be late for school,” she said. “What’s the matter with you? You seem sick. You were yelling and screaming the whole night. I had to put a silencing spell on your bedroom so I could sleep. Ew! You’re drenched in sweat!”
I wiped my forehead and rubbed my fingers together. I touched my hair and it felt like I had just taken a shower. “Ew. Okay. Wait, I’ve been yelling?”
Bonnie crossed her arms. “Well, it was more like talking. I was over exaggerating. You were saying stuff like, ‘Please don’t kill me,’ and, ‘No!’, and you were muttering some spells too. The spells never worked though. Look, just get up. Do you want me to help you dry your hair?”
“No,” I muttered. “I’ll be okay.”
“Alright,” she said. She strode off to her room and I heard the door close with a bang.
I jumped out of my bed and ran to the bathroom. My face was pale. I looked like I had seen a ghost. I turned the warm water on in the sink and splashed the water onto my face. It felt good, but I still felt sick and panic-stricken.
I could fake an illness. Well, I don’t need to pretend, I’m sick already.
I walked to my parent’s room and knocked on the door.
My dad opened the door, his black hair messy and wild-looking. His sleepy, brown eyes stared into my alarmed ones.
“What do you need, Natalie?” he asked, yawning.
“I don’t feel good,” I moaned.
“I know that,” he said, squinting at my forehead. “There’s something else you’d like to tell me, but you’re blocking it out. I’m impressed!”
I tried to smile. “Look, Dad, I really don’t feel good!”
He put a hand to my forehead. “Natalie Jennifer Wright, you are faking an illness.”
Nick passed by us and snickered. “Oooh, Natalie lied for once!” he joked.
I turned to him. “Shut up!” I snapped. I turned back to my dad as Nick turned the stairs into a skating ramp, like he does every morning, and started skate boarding down the ramp doing tricks. Once he got the bottom, he waved his finger in the air and the ramp turned back into steps. He smiled and started towards the kitchen, skateboard tucked under his right arm.
“One of these days, if he scrapes the stairs with that skateboard, I’m going to take it away from him,” my dad said, shaking his head. “Look, just get dressed and I’ll give you, a potion or something, to drink so you’ll feel better. You look really pale, but you’re not in a fever state. You’ll have to go to school.”
I groaned and walked back to my bathroom as my dad closed the door to his bedroom.

“Natalie! You look so pale! Are you sick?” Amy asked as I turned the dial on the locker’s lock.
“No, no, I’m okay,” I lied.
“You’re lying,” Emily said simply.
“How do you know?” I asked as I took out the books I needed for the first few periods.
“You’re pale, you look like you’ve seen a ghost, and you just seem…sick…” Emily responded.
“I agree,” Tammie said. “She looks honestly panic-stricken.”
“Look guys!” I exclaimed, shutting my locker door with a loud crash. “There’s nothing wrong with me, okay?”
I held my books close to my chest. My hearts started pounding against them. I hoped they wouldn’t ask me to fork over my journal.
“Whatever,” they replied together.
Amy looked around. “Uh-oh, here comes Amber, Sasha, Nola and their ‘boyfriends’ Caleb, Nevan, and Joshua.”
Amber, Sasha, and Nola were the three most popular girls at St. Joseph’s. Although the teachers and our principal, Sister Abigail, always taught us about treating each other equally, they always tuned out on those speeches and just whispered to each other the whole entire time putting all the kids where they stand in their ‘social area’. Thankfully, Tammie and Sasha are both on the track team and they get along…okay, so we’re somewhat semi-popular.
Amber has waist-length blonde hair, hazel eyes, and chestnut colored skin. She’s the captain of the cheerleading squad and also plays basketball for the school’s team.
Sasha, like I said, is a member of the track team. She also plays basketball and is one of the flyers for the cheerleading squad. She has brownish-reddish chest long hair that is curled at the ends. She has brown eyes that are ready to glare at a nerd at any given moment, just as long as that moment is when a teacher isn’t around.
Nola has wavy, brown shoulder length hair and green eyes. She is also a flyer on the cheerleading squad and the co-captain. That’s her only club she’s in at school. I heard she’s trying out for the YMCA swim team and takes art classes at the community center, but I’m not exactly sure.
Caleb, Nevan, and Joshua are their boyfriends. More like their puppets! Joshua’s mom is the school’s chef (she was off the day they served casserole), and they always make him grab extra food.
Caleb is the captain of the school’s soccer team. He’s pretty tall, about 5 feet 4 inches I suppose. He has brown hair, but he dyed it blonde so it’s a mix between blonde and brown hair. He has blue eyes that are always softened around his girlfriend, Amber.
Nevan is Nola’s boyfriend. He has black hair and brown eyes. He’s the captain of the boy’s basketball team.
Finally, there’s Joshua. He’s Sasha’s boyfriend, but we get along pretty well. He’s the captain of the community center’s baseball team, the Quicksters. He also is my next door neighbor. He has blonde hair and soft blue eyes.
Now that I thought of it...Caleb’s always got a softened, dreamy look when he’s around Amber. Could she be a witch or even a Lezzela? Lezzelas are like Veelas in Harry Potter, but Lezzelas can cast spells stronger than love potions and tend to be rude. I’ve never even heard of a humble Lezzela. They’re always bragging about themselves.

“Er…hi,” I said, as they stopped in front of us.
Amber looked at me, her hazel eyes surveying me. She was probably thinking about how ugly I looked all pale and scared looking. “Oh, hi, Emily, Amy, Tammie…” she said, pointing at each of them as she said their name, “…er…what’s you name again?” She pointed at me and put a finger to the corner of her mouth.
A flame burned inside of me. She knew what my name was! Of course she did! She’s just trying to be mean!
“You know what my name is!” I snapped.
Sasha whispered in Amber’s ear. Her eyes widened.
“Oh yes! The Wright girl, Natalie. No need to be upset.” She smiled as she said this.
“What do you want Amber?” I asked.
“Oh, I just came to talk to you, silly!” Amber exclaimed, brushing her hair away from her eyes. “Word around here says that you’re going out with my former boyfriend, Jake Andrews.”
“So what if they’re going out? I went out with Jonathan McCarthy last month,” Tammie said, crossing her arms.
“True, true,” Amber said, now putting her hands on her hips. “But, where is he? Shouldn’t he be here right now? I heard that he disappeared, not wanting to see your face again.” She paused, smiling faintly at my reddening face.
“He wouldn’t!” I blurted out.
“Oh, but that’s not all, Wright girl. I heard that after he went out with you, he called up Aimee Abney and asked her out,” Nola said, putting an arm around Nevan.
“Yeah right!” I said.
“Er…I don’t mean to interrupt,” Emily said, “but who the heck is Aimee Abney?”
“Oh, she’s an exchange student from France. She’s going to Blueford Middle School. I don’t know how he got her number, but I know he asked her out,” Nola said. She smiled deviously.
“He wouldn’t!” I repeated.
“Oh, but he has,” Sasha said.
Amber looked at her gold wristwatch. “Come guys, we’ve gotta get to class. Let’s just leave these duds here with their mouths hanging open trying to not believe the truth.” She turned around on her new shiny, black flats and ventured into a crowd of gathering students. Her friends followed, walking behind her and trying not to get too close to Amber’s swishing, blonde hair.
I took a piece of paper from my binder, crushed it, then pulled it, ripping it in half.
“Wow,” Amy said, eyeing the ripped pieces of paper lying on the floor. “Somebody’s mad about their boyfriend playing ‘Go Out With Me-Ditch’.”
“Not funny,” I snapped.
I had a feeling it wasn’t true, but a little voice kept telling me that Jake could’ve ditched me.

Once I got home, my mom was already in the kitchen looking through the mail.
I entered the kitchen and she immediately stood up.
“Natalie, there’s something I need to tell you,” she said, sitting down.
I pulled up a chair and sat down next to her. “What is it?” I mumbled. I was still in a bad mood.
She folded her hands on her lap and said quietly, “Jake has been kidnapped. Jake has been kidnapped by Aristo Mauvais.”
