‘Well,’ thought Aretha, dangling upside down, ‘Next time I go on a quest to defeat an enemy more perilous than death, I have to think of better parting words than, “I have to hurry”. So contrived.’

Aretha pitched forward a bit, as the ground started sloping. Her hands and arms were both tied to a long rod, and two men carried her in a long procession. Aretha’s blood began to rush to her head.

“Hai!” she called to one of the men who were carrying her. “Might you could untie my legs so I could walk? This is rather uncomfortable, please let me down.”

The man behind her said steadily, “No. If you can’t walk, you can’t escape. Now be silent. There is a long way to go.”

“Where are we going, sir?” Aretha asked the man in front of her.

The man craned his head to watch her. “To Anisocasi of Rivesivee, three hours between the suns setting and the north.” He had a thin voice, but he was taller than the person behind her. Aretha closed her eyes. He had the most painful stare. And inside her heart sank. So they were going northwest. The exact opposite direction of where she had to go.

“Why am I going there, kind sir?”

He snorted. “Don’t kind sir me. It’s obvious from your filthy clothes that you’re of some status. I want to know where you have been, and where you are going. That’s why we’re going to Anisocasi. I want to know why, or I would have killed you right in the forest. So that’s why we’re taking you northwest, to see Prince Rivesivee. He’s going to see you the moment we get there.”

“Can you order him like that?”

“Of course I can.” He looked away from her. “I’m his father.”
