Chapter 2

Nine Years Later

Sally!

Hey, did you hear about the formal? I hear Billy likes Allie!!!!!! *squeals*

Can you imagine? Our little Allie, finally growing up! She totally likes him back, even though she denies it. Do you think he'll ask her?

Shay!

Shay,

Do you have to write so humongous? It's called belles lettres, and your's is nowhere near it, more superfluous than lettres. Anyways, of course he'll ask her! He's nowhere near as shy as Allie! We just have to convince her to say yes!

Sally

Sally!

Bellas whatas?! You've got to use simpler words on me,sweetie! And getting her to say yes, that will be a snap! I totally have a-

Shay's note was ripped from under her over-sized purple glittery pen before she could even finish her sentence. She slowly looked up to see Mrs. Burgenheimer staring at her menacingly. What a great word, Sal. If only I didn't have to use it to describe our tenth grade teacher.

"Ms. Nason. Just because your family owns the biggest house in town does not give you the right to write notes in my class! And you well know the penalty for writing notes in my class!"

Shay slumped down in her seat. She knew all right. Miserably, she looked at Sally, who's eyes were wide with terror. Her gaze slid to Allie, who's head was cocked in curiosity. If only she could be spared the mortification that was about to be thrust upon her by her two best friends.

Mrs. Burgenheimer, or Burger- Evil, as she was referred to behind her back, began to read the note aloud. Shay and Sally simultaneously slumped further and further down in their seats until they were almost on the floor. Unfortunately, the note wasn't done.

" ' He's nowhere near as shy as Allie! We just have to convince her to say yes!' "

The note continued. Sally snuck a quick glance at Allie. She was writing furiously in her notebook, a gleaming waterfall of blond hair hiding her face. Sally looked away. Allie must be humiliated! Irate! Wrathful! Enraged! Incensed! Infuriated! There was no end to the possibilities in her vocabulary to describe Allie's anger. She may be shy, but if you were close enough to her, she could blow up at you in a second. Sally sighed. If only that stupid note would end! Or the bell could ring. Either one would do.

Dear Diary,

I am so angry at Sally and Shay. I can't believe that they wrote that note. I am going to have to let them squirm for awhile. But if it goes on too long, the moms could get involved. Then I'll never hear the end of it. This town is just too small to keep a secret.

And I'm not going to let the girls know that one good thing did come from their insipid note.(A lovely word, don't you think? Sally used it to describe Missy Waters. Will, Misty is more like it. Her brain has got to be drowned by all the mist in that head of hers!) Anyways, Billy happened to ask me out after class, when I was at my locker. And when I say out, I mean to the formal. Then, he walked me home!!! Typical small town love charm, but, what can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic for it! So I'll "forgive" the girls tomorrow. I'm not the shy seven-year old I once was. In fact, once Shay moved here, I think my shyness moved right on out.

Oh, you know the story don't you? Two best friends, spy on the rich, city girl moving in next door. They're caught and the confident one butts heads with the girl. They would've been the worst of enemies if the other one hadn't stopped them and made peace. Now, we're the best of friends. I'm kind of surprised. Who knew we'd last this long without a fight?

Until next time,

Allie

Sally and Shay stared warily as they watched Billy and Allie walk up the path to school. They were in deep conversation, then she looked up, saw them, smiled, then said good-bye to Billy. She walked over with a grin on her face. But within a few steps of them, it slipped right off her face, and she walked right on past them.

Sally and Shay groaned. So close.

In second period French, a note appeared on each of their desks.

Dear Shay and Sally,

I've decided that since Billy ended up asking me to the formal, I can't stay mad at you two forever. So, what's for lunch?

Allie

Allie,

Fantastic! Spectacular! Amazing! Excellent! Stupendous! See, if that note hadn't been written, you might or might not have been asked out by Billy! Really, logic suggests that you only have us to thank. If it weren't for our blatantness, you'd still be the single, unasked Allie. Now you're the taken, asked Allie. How does spaghetti sound?

Sally

Allie!!!!!!

I knew it! sally is so right! We are the sole providers for your current bliss! EEEEH! And Sal, SPAGHETTI?! Again? How about the standard BLT, PBJ, HAC trade?

Shay!

Shay and Sally,

Whatever! You two just keep thinking you deserve all credit! And, what Shay? Can't chip in ten bucks from your bloated rich girl's allowance? Kidding! The sandwich trade sounds fine to me! Sal, you love spaghetti way to much!

Allie

"So, fill us in Allie? When'd he ask you?!!!" Shay asked before biting into her traded BLT.

"Give it a rest! She just took a bite out of her PBJ! The more you ask, the longer she'll take. I've seen it."

Allie smiled, savoring the power she held. Her friends were starved for details. And she was the only one with them.

She finished her bite, daintily picked up her napkin, dabbed at her mouth lightly, and gently set it down. Then she-

"JUST TELL US ALREADY!"

Startled, she dropped her napkin, sighed, picked it up, shook her head and rolled her eyes.

"Fine. He asked me after the last bell, walked me home and walked me to school this morning. That's all."

Shay and Sally looked at each other, and squealed. Allie merely rolled her eyes, knowing they couldn't help it.

J:

Today was absolutely fabulous. Full of tales of capricious love between Allie and Billy. Okay, maybe I'm embellishing. But it's just so romantic. I can't help but get excited. You may think my extra excitement due to my own suppressed emotions. As if I had any! No boy here is for me! None have a vocabulary equal to my own. You may consider this a bit haughty, but I do you honestly expect me to fraternize with boys unequal to my brains? Why waste my time? All they care about is sports. Stupid lunkheads. If I were shallow enough to sink to the level of certain girls(like say, Misty Waters?), I would show them my sports skills. But I refuse to try to wow them in such a way. I'll only be appreciated for my skills, not my brains. And that's what I believe truly matters. And if it truly matters to me, than it would matter to my true love, correct?

Sally

Sally put her journal away, turned out her light and went to sleep.
