Blades of Night-Chapter 26

“Zenaku has been absent for quite a while, my lord. Don’t you think it is a bit suspi-?”

“Don’t tell me what is suspicious and what’s not! Reikoku, if you are so curious, go find out where he goes for yourself!”

“Yes, my lord,” Reikoku said softly, walking quickly for the door.

The armies of Zenaku marched through the narrow gorge, mist hanging over them like a blanket. The fog was impenetrable, and their vision was clouded. The rhythmic sound of soldiers marching was mingled with the soft pitter-patter of rain, turning the soil into mud.

Zenaku, on his black horse, rode at the front of the army. His clan mon fluttered overhead: a fox head on blue banners. Zenaku rode forward with a determined expression on his face; he knew his decision.

His soldiers wore deep blue body armor, and the horns on their helmets were silver. They were extremely well trained in discipline and swordplay. Their katanas were ice blue, capable of freezing someone solid. The spearmen had spears with flames on the blade, enabling the attacker to set something aflame. The archers had a mixture of ice and fire arrows.

Zenaku peered through the haze, trying to spot his enemies. His search was fruitless, however, for the enemy was nowhere to be found.

His enemy was cunning and wily, and probably anticipated him. They would not be thwarted easily.

He looked up to see if the weather showed any signs of change. The rain was persistent, and as if mocking Zenaku, thunder rolled across the valley. Then, it happened. Zenaku spotted something in the sky. Black and rather unnatural. He heard a strange growling sound, too. What is that? Zenaku thought. It hit him like a rock. Color drained from Zenaku’s face as he realized he was not the only one knowing what he would do. Reikoku and an army were hovering above on the dragons of Hell, ready to come down and rain death on Zenaku’s army!
