2. MERMAID
Yes, you read that right. A face. The most beautiful one I had ever seen, looking curiously up at me before hurriedly swimming away.
Using her tail.
I was so shocked I almost fell into the water, luckily my dad grabbed my shirt and held me back or I would’ve ruined my clothes.
“You alright there Cy?” dad asked, laughing. “Wouldn’t want you to fall in! Imagine what would happen to you, nicely brushed hair?” He mocked.
I wasn’t in the mood for sarcasm, after what I had just seen.
“Dad there was someone swimming under our boat. And she had a tail,” I muttered, light headed.
He looked at me with a strange expression on his face.
“Yeah, I think you’re right. We should go. It looks like you’ve had too much sun.” He started the motor, heading for shore.
“No really! Go back! She might be in trouble!”
Dad stopped the little dingy and turned his head around. The once icy-smooth lake was now covered in ripples, disturbed by the motor. But there was no one coming up for breath, even though the closest shore was at least two hundred metres away.
“It was probably just a fish or you saw yourself in the water. Either way we better be going,” dad turned on the motor again.
“But it was really there!” I screamed, determined to prove it to him.
Concern creased his brow.
“Look, you just had a bit too much sun. At the cabin go lie down and have a nice long rest.”
“But-” I stopped when I saw the look on my dads face.

As soon as the car stopped in the drive way, I jumped out and stomped over to the door. I knew what I had seen. It wasn’t sun stroke. I lifted up the welcome mat, and took the key that was hidden there. Once the door was open I trudged inside, went to my room and slammed the door. Ok so I knew I was having a tantrum, but I knew what I saw! At least I’m not crying like some kids do when people don’t believe them.
I hardly ever cry. The only time I remember doing so, was at my mothers funeral.
I sat against the door, using myself as a brace so no one will be able to open it, and think about what I had seen.
The girl looked about my age, with long, flowing blonde-teal hair that floated around her face gracefully in the water. Her skin was olive in colour and didn’t have any distinguishing marks. It was pale and smooth. The girl looked delicate but strong.
But she did have a tail. An aqua green one, covered in scales, like a fishes but it was two metres long.
