MERMAID (chapter 3.2)

in my own little bubble

“Nice to see you again,” I said, almost choking. Even though she was an old woman, Lynn had a very strong grip.

Finally she let go of me. “The usual?” she asked, tottering back behind the counter.

“Yes please Lynn,” called my dad, already engaged in the book shelves.

While she was busy making the hot chocolate and the flat white I thought about where books on mermaids where.

“Um Lynn, where are the books on mermaids?” I had to whisper the last word since my dad was near by. I didn’t want him to know I was still on about the mermaid thing.

“Shelf ten dear, by the window,” she yelled from the kitchen.

“Thanks!” I quickly strolled past my dad, still in the horror section, and walked towards shelf ten.

I pressed my finger on the spine of a book and move it across, checking the name of each book  to find one that I need.  After about five minutes of looking, I was about to give up when I spyed a title, mermaids and their habits. It wasn’t a large book. Only about a eighty pages, but I took it from the shelf and read the small blurb at the back:

Mermaids and their habits is a quality not quantity book with everything you will need to know about mermaids. What they eat, where they live, what they look like and their character traits, all in an easy to carry paperback. Enjoy learning about these fantastic mythical creatures.

Next in the series:

Vampires and their habits

Fairies and their habits

Nymphs and their habits

It was only fifty cents so I decided to get it. I sauntered casually up to the counter and bought it while dad was moving on to the thriller book section. My dad loves scary stories. I have no idea why. They just freak me out. At least fantasy novels are interesting.

“Jerry, Cy your drinks are ready,” Lynn pushed two steaming hot take away cups onto the counter towards us. “That’ll be seven fifty thanks.”

Dad groaned “prices keep going up. Especially oil! We might not be able to come here next year.”

“Oh no Jerry, we all miss you two when you leave. Everyone can’t stop talking about all the good times we had over the summers,” Lynn smiled, remembering the memories.

“Well I guess it’ll take more than rising petrol costs to keep me away from this place. We better be going, James has probably finished our lunch already. We’ll see you later Lynn. Sorry we didn’t find anything today. Bye,” and dad took his coffee off the counter and headed out the door.

As I clutched my hot chocolate, Lynn winked at me, knowingly. I beamed at her, thankful that she didn’t say anything about me buying the book. Lynn was so great.

“See you later Lynn,” I waved back, as I rushed to catch up with my dad.

We got the chips, said goodbye and drove home. I kept the small book in my pocket, hidden from my dad and the rest of the world.
