The rigging was swaying with the rocking of the boat. Sammey suddenly felt seasick.
She took a breath and put one hand on the first piece of rope and hoisted herself up. The ropes wiggled dangerously. Why must the wind pick up now? She asked herself. She pulled up onto the second ladder, and the third and fourth. The climbing was getting easier and easier. She heard a noise that sounded like a screech or a growl. Sammey looked out over the water. Something was bubbling and frothing in the depths below. She turned around to tell the other pirates what she saw. The height she was at made her stomach lurch dangerously. The worst possible thing to do was look down. Trevor was looking at her waving up to keep going. Sammey saw the crows nest a few yards away from her. She must keep going! The frothing was getting more massive but she must not let it distract her. The crows nest was only a few feet away from her now. The men on the ship were now pointing at the water and calling for Flynn. All eyes were either on the water or Sammey.
She made it to the crows nest. Her arms were throbbing and her hands had rope burn. The man at the crows nest was asleep and not waking up. She flipped him over to see and arrow in his back. The foaming water was now what looked like a water spout. She wanted to get down to the deck now! She looked down to see the ropes of the rigging had been cut loose in the middle. She would have to climb down now on the flapping lower edges. The new threat to her life made Sammey’s blood run cold.
The waterspout was drawing closer to the ship, still all eyes were on Sammey. Why didn’t they see the waterspout? Finally she put one foot on the outer rim of the ropes. She wobbled dangerously over the water so she shifted her weight to the other side. With every step she found herself hovering over the water. She tried not to scream or yell for help but this was a battle she would have to win someday.
The waterspout was growing and still drawing ever nearer. Finally Sammey had to yell.
“Captain look out at the water!”
Flynn looked to where she was pointing, sure enough he spotted the spout and started to bellow orders. Sammey jumped down the final three feet and ran to the galley to warn Esther and Heather.
They were already outside climbing up to the sails to tie them up again. She could also see Trevor his eyes blazing climbing down from a sail that had already been tied up. The waterspout was so close to the ship now she could feel the winds from it.
“All hands below deck!” called Captain Flynn. The rumbling of feet grew louder and louder and the whistle from the spout was overpowering. She ran down after Trevor who was calling and waving to her from a door set into the deck.
“Come on! We have to get below, Captain’s orders.” His eyes were flashing with fear.
“Do you know how that thing just sprang up in the middle of the water?” she asked him panting and trying to keep up with his fast pace.
“Shh! Ask questions later, if we live to have a later.” Her chest was flaming with adrenaline.
They reached a room that was packed with about fifty men and Esther.
“Come here lass.” she ordered. Esther placed a blanket on her thin shoulders. Trevor got the same treatment from Thug. A crash from up above told the crew that the spout had just landed on deck.
Sammey could not take it any more. She feinted in shock and fear.
