CHAPTER 2:

On reaching home, he flung the book on the dining table and ran out again, locking the door behind him. He did not want to stay in the house all alone; Dad was working as usual. His father normally came home at ten or later, so nowadays Jerry had to stay waiting for him – alone in the house. Sometimes Emily came over to keep him company, but her parents only allowed her to stay ‘till eight.

He gaited over to Benjamin Jepson’s house, which was two houses away from his. Knocking the door politely, Benjamin’s mother opened it, greeted him (when he greeted her) and told him that Ben was in the computer room. Going up the stairs, he entered the room and Benjamin yelled out as usual, “Hey man! Wanna play ‘Star Wars’?”

Accepting the invitation, the two boys sat down and entertained themselves on the computer.

It was 7:30p.m when Jerry left the Jepson’s and instead of going to his deserted house, he went straight to Emily’s. He used to go there a lot, too, when Emily wasn’t allowed to come to his house.

Her mum opened the door and let him in with a kind smile. He walked slowly upstairs and then ran once she was out of sight. Reaching her room which was adjoining to her sister’s room, he pushed in through the door.

He knew he wasn’t allowed to just barge into girl’s rooms like that, but Emily did it all the time to his room as there was no rule that girls couldn’t just enter a boy’s room.

A light smell of air-freshener met his nostrils… he hated the smells girls use. Why could they just use normal smells in their rooms, like him?

Ignoring it, he noticed Amelia who was sitting on the edge of bed, with her back to him, listening to her I-pod. Oblivious that Jerry was in the room, he slowly crept up behind her and grabbed her shoulders shouting out, “BOO!”

He always used to scare her like that – Emily was an easy target. But this time she merely jumped, weirdly enough, and recognizing his voice – even through the blasting music from her I-pod – said, without looking at him, “Hey Jer. What are you doing here?”.

“What this smell?” He asked. “Orange smelling… horrid, isn’t it?”, she said. “Um…”, Jerry couldn’t understand Amelia. She normally wasn’t like that.

“What are you doin’ here?”, she repeated. Jerry thought she was still thinking about the fight and said, “Look, let’s just forget about that silly fight okay, I admit it’s my fault-“ but Emily cut him off and pulled off her earphones, looking up, saying,” What? What fight?”

“Emma?!”, Jerry said taken aback. He thought he was talking to Emily, but instead he was chatting to her twin sister, Emma!

Emily had three sisters. One of them was adopted – both her parent believed in caring for orphans.

The youngest one is Jinnee.
Jinnee was the one adopted. She was Korean and ten-years-old. She was all smiles – her pinpoint black hair always flew about her face – her honey-coloured skin.

Mêlée had shoulder-length, auburn hair with almond shaped, chocolate-coloured eyes.
Her cute freckles showed up on her rosy-coloured skin and she was eleven. One reason Jerry least liked her from all of the sisters, was because she had a major crush on him.

Amanda (also known as Emma) who was Emily’s twin had the exact long, blond hair and peach skinned like her. Nobody could tell them apart (except for Jerry, who’d seen them loads of times and could tell one difference), even their mother - they were like two peas in a pod.

Ever since Jerry met the Watson’s, he wished he had an enormous family like that one. The one missing member of the family, now, was the one who brought most of the jolly fun in it. The father. Emily’s father. He had died in a car-crash – instant death.

That’s what made them close friends - one didn’t have a mother, the other didn’t have a father. Though, it was different in some cases.

Watching Mum die was horrible for Jerry – he endlessly locked himself in his room and responded to no one – not even his best friends at that time – Henry Welling and Peter Helms.

Jerry’s mother died because of a disease – lung cancer. At that time (two months ago), he hadn’t befriended Amelia, he knew her (and her sisters) but just didn’t talk to them – they hung out in their own little groups.

Just two days after Jerry’s mum’s death (which was a terrifying event) was the terrible car crash. Jerry didn’t come to school for a while and so didn’t the Watson sisters – there were rumors all ‘round the school about the two deaths.

It was because of the two parents that Jerry and Emily met each other – both had lost one parent. For some reason, Jerry was more attached to Amelia than to Amanda, it was weird, ‘cause Emma was more tomboyish and daring and Amelia was the type that loves reading and does the stuff girls do.

The difference between the twins was they’re eyes. The colours of those eyes was green (they are known as the Pixie-twins at school – emerald eyes were rather exotic), but if you saw them loads of times like Jerry or looked really closely at the pair, you could see that Amanda’s eyes were just bright jade but Amelia’s eyes had a mixture of sky-blue and green in it – but it was barely visible.

Now as Jerry looked into shining green eyes, he said astonished, “How come you’re in Emily’s room? Where’s she?”.

“I knew you were lookin’ for her… she’s in my room – dunno why she wanted to switch rooms for tonight… “, Murmured Emma smiling, putting on her earphones, again.

“’Kay”, grinned Jerry, and moved towards the other door on the other side of the bright orange-wallpapered room. Emily’s favorite colour was orange – but Emma hated it, she liked blue – which explained why Emma said the air-freshener’s smell was horrid. He pressed his ear to the door and heard Emily singing.
He smiled. That was another one of Emily’s passions and she was quite good in soccer, too. She didn’t join in singing competitions in school or anything – she was too shy – only her family and Jerry knew about her wonderful talent.

He accidentally knew about it though, he entered her room at that time and heard her singing in the bathroom at the top of her voice, ‘Shine’ of Hilary Duff’s. After Emily came out and found Jerry, Emily became ballistic and they had a scuffle in which Emily won. She was an expert in karate.

Right now she seemed to be singing one of Lindsay Lohan’s songs.
“… Daddy to hold me… that’s what I needed… So, why’d you have to go… why’d you have to go… why’d you have to go…”, sang she. Her voiced matched to that of Hilary’s but not really to Lindsay’s but he knew why she sang it – she missed her dad. His smile dimmed at the thought, and he entered without knocking.

He saw Emily jump as she looked up at him and he saw her hide something as quick as lightning behind her back, he could not see what it was. “Whatever that was, I’m gonna find out”, he thought craftily to himself as Emily started to scold him.
