Chapter one
“Wake up Crystal!” Stripes said nervously. “What is it Stripes?” I looked up, dazed and tired. “ I heard something, and I think it was big.” Stripes and I are about the same; we’re both huskies, both strong, both were abandoned by our owner, and both have no family, except each other. There is only one difference: she is scared of a lot of things, and I’m very brave. We are the Von Husk sisters. “Go to bed, I guess it’s my turn to patrol.” I mumbled sleepily. “ OK, are you sure you want to go early?” she asked. “Yeah, you get your rest.” I said kindly. “Thanks Crystal.” “No problem.” I got up and walked to the edge of the blanket we had taken from our old house. You might wonder why we didn’t stay at the old house. They had it torn down by workmen. We had grabbed the blanket just before they started to destroy our house. I sniffed the air. “What is it Crystal?” Stripes asked. “ I don’t know. Very weird, I’ve never smelt it before, yet it smells familiar.” I said, deep in thought. “ G-good night Crystal.” Stripes stammered. “ Good night. Don’t worry, Stripes, I won’t let anything happen to you.” I said. It was a very touching moment. We are usually arguing. “ROAR!” “Ahhhhhh!” Screamed Stripes. “GRRRR!” We both were shivering.
“STAY AWAY YOU MANGY TIGER!” That voice sounded familiar, yet I didn’t recognize it. “Crystal, what was that?” “ I don’t know.”
Chapter two
“ROAR!” There it was again. “GRRRR!” “Lets go, someone might need help!” I was surprised that it was Stripes who said it. “Ok, but don’t back out at the last second.” I said. “I promise not to.” We were running at top speed. In no time at all, we were there. To my surprise, Stripes climbed out of the bush and said: “ I shall show no fear to those who try to hurt my fellow animals.” I just stared, open mouthed, then whispered “what have you done to my sister?” I climbed out. “ I too shall fight without mercy for my fellow kind animals.” A tiger and husky looked up. “ You are just children. You wouldn’t stand a chance against me, but all the same, more to eat!” Growled the tiger. The husky looked too familiar, and yet again I didn’t recognize it. “ Who are you?” I asked. The husky didn’t answer, but took this pause as a privilege and bit hard on the tiger’s leg. The tiger yelped, then lunged, but I scratched it’s nose before it could do any harm. It turned to me and lunged again, but I ducked and bit its chest. “Yow! You are very skilled, I see, lets see if you are a worthy opponent.” He spread his claws and aimed one front paw at my sister and one back paw at the other husky. Then it started reaching for them. Knowing it thought I wouldn’t get really close, I ran at it, knocked it over, scratched his stomach, and, biting his legs, whacked him on the head. Then I helped my sister and the husky up, and stood back. The tiger stood up wobbly, and said; “very good technique, figuring out what they don’t think you’ll do and using it against them. You really are a very worthy opponent. But you wont be when you are in my stomach!” “Ha! Like a mangy tiger like you could defeat three strong huskies like us!” I said. That got him up and running. “ROAR! DO NOT CALL ME A MANGY TIGER!” Just as he was about to hit us, I pulled everyone aside and he passed us and landed in a thorny bush. “ Hey! I actually felt a tiny breeze there!” I teased the tiger. “AAGGHH!” He cried in anguish. Then he jumped and ran again. This time, he followed us when we moved. “On the count of three; I’ll start biting him, Stripes will start scratching, and you can start kicking.” I said. “ ONE, TWO, THREE!” We ran at him and started biting, clawing, and kicking. When we finished he said: “ I know when to accept defeat. We will meet again, young warriors.” “ He called me a warrior!” Stripes said excitedly. “ You were a warrior all along, Stripes. I always knew you had it in you.” “ Who are you?” The husky said. “We are the Von Husk sisters. I replied. “ Von Husk? Stripes? Crystal?” “ Yep…. wait a minute! I never told you my name! How do you know it?” I said. “Um, well, you might not believe this but, I’m Clarice Von Husk.” “Mom? Mom! Is that really you?!?” We Cried. “Yes, it is me.”
Chapter three
“ Oh Mom! We really missed you! So that’s why I got the feeling that I knew you!” I said. “Yes. I have been searching four years for you two. Have you been good?” “ Yes Mom, we’ve been good!” We said. “ You have become very skilled Crystal, and you have become very brave Stripes, just like your sister.” My sister stood tall and proud with her tail uncurled and standing straight up. “ Wow, you must think I’m really brave Stripes.” I said, also standing proudly.
“ Yeah, I’ve been wishing to be as brave as you ever since I could see. I remember opening my eyes and there you were, fighting off any danger that came towards me.” She said. “ Amazing. I never thought that I would see you two being nice to each other.” Our Mom teased. “ Um, Mom? Why did you disappear when we were only two years old?” I asked, not trying to hurt her feelings. “ I didn’t disappear, I just went to doggy obedience class. I would only be gone for two days!” She said. “ When I got home and heard that you two were gone, I immediately ran out of the house and started searching. I almost had a heart attack I was so scared!” “ We’re sorry Mom, we wont run away ever again, if we ever find our owners.” “What do you mean?” “Well, while we were searching for you, we went back to the house to see if you were there. They saw us and took us back home. Then one morning, we woke up, and they had packed up, moved, and abandoned us.” We said, tears welling up in our eyes. “ Well, It’ll be an adventure looking for them, won’t it?” “ Yeah! An adventure!”
Chapter four
I sniffed, looking for a scent. In fact, we were all sniffing and listening. “I got something!” Stripes called out. We followed her to the edge of the forest. “Good job, Stripes!” I said. “Come on, I can still smell it, but it goes back into the forest.” “ Oh well, they might have built a little house in the forest.” I said. “Good thinking Crystal.” We followed Stripes for what seemed like hours. Then I said: “ Anyone else have the feeling were being watched? If it’s that tiger again, I’ll teach him a HUGE lesson he’ll never forget; don’t mess with the Von Husk family!”
“Von Husk? I know you guys!” “Who’s there?! What do you want? Don’t start a fight with me! I’ll have you know we defeated a tiger with just teeth, claws, and skill!” I called. Nothing, silence now. “That’s it, don’t speak! Are you afraid?” Still nothing. “Lets keep moving.” I said. “ You were very brave to do that. If it had been that tiger again, he would have been very angry.” We started moving until we came to a small cave. “ Lets just hope this isn’t a bear cave!” I said, and we went in.
Chapter five
It was pretty dark in the cave, other than the fading light from the opening. All of a sudden “BARK! WHO GOES THERE, FRIEND, OR FOE?” “ Um, we are the Von Husks, and I think we’re friends.” I said. “YOU MAY COME IN!” The voice said. “ I AM CHASE. I CANNOT TELL YOU MY LAST NAME THOUGH.” “That is okay, I am Crystal, my sister, Stripes is here, and our mother, Clarice.” “OKAY.” We moved forward. “COME NO FURTHER. I SHALL SHOW MYSELF SOON.” Suddenly, a figure came out of the darkness. “Who was the brave one who spoke?” It said. I sat down and raised my paw. “I was.” I said. “Come with me.” We followed the figure into a lantern-lit part of the cave. “ You can tell them now, Chase.” “Yes Clarice, I will. Children, I am Chase Von Husk.” My own father, the one I’d never met, was standing right beside me. I sat staring and open mouthed. So did Stripes. “How does a little family reunion sound?” He said. “ Sounds wonderful!” We all said at once. My Dad brought out some turkey, rabbit, and some soup out. And for desert, cakes, cookies, and some hot chocolate. “ This truly is a happy family,” I said. We sang happy songs and danced together. “ I love my family!” I said. “ And we all love each other.”
