Miria lay in bed. She had long abandoned reading; she lied and said she had a headache and retired to her quiet bedroom. Now it was nearly ten o`clock; the bustle was quieting down to the occasional swish of water. All of a sudden, Miria was filled with energy and recklessness. She threw back the kelp covers and quietly swam to the window. The oh so carefully pulled herself through and drifted a little; then she quietly swam upwards.

Miria swam softly and slowly while near the houses, but now she was far away. SHe swam as fast as she could, never slowing down, never ceasing. If her arms protested paddling, she ignored them. If her tail grew tired, she stopped feeling it. SHe swam fiercly; and though only of Tom. Suddenly her head broke the surface with a "splash!"

Miria breathed hard, panting, and her face stung from the cool night air. Through cracks in the trees She saw the tiniest fiery slice of the sun, just disappearing beneath the waves. Miria had never seen dusk before, she swam intrestedly shallower, watching the pink and gold clouds becomes silvery as the sun disappeard and the full moon rose.

Miria, tired from her restless day and hard swim up, sat where it was shallow her sky-blue tail shone with the silvery light of the moon. SHe sifted the sand through her fingers and watched longingly at the ship. She was so longing to see Tom. She crawled over the beach and climbed into the ocean. She slid over slippery rocks and touched the rough wood. She dipped a finger in the sea and raised it to her lips. She made a face at the salt.

Miria ran her fingers over the algae-covered boulders until her fingers closed on a small pebble. She picked it up, looking at the smoothness, then was siezed by a reckless daring she was almost afraid of. Then she stopped feeling. She drew her arm back, took and breath, and hurled the pebble with all her might. She cringed at the sound of breaking glass, a thud, several muffled shouts, and a distinctive "TOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!"

Miria sat frozen. She heard more protesting yells, and Tom said, (in his lovely, calming voice) "chill down, fellas. I`ll take a look around and catch whoevers having a bit of fun." Miria bit her lip, stunned at what she had done, then, coming to her senses, crawled over the sand and swam away.
