Not improper, just

Not improper, just irregular. :^) Both "kneeled" and "knelt" are correct. It depends on the sentence style, flow, and context. Same goes for bended and bent, awakened and awoke, etc. :^)

I prefer the irregular verb

I prefer the irregular verb forms.

Outshone rather than outshined, leapt rather than leaped, sewn rather than sewed, slain rather than slayed, sped rather than speeded, etc.

Personal preference.
