Chapter 2
The Phone call
Daniel reached for the phone and dialed John Wells’ number, and then he held it against his ear as it began to ring at the other end of the line.
John Wells had been his best friend ever since they were little and started Kindergarten together. In second grade they made up a way to combine their favorite sports “basketball and football.” When they were in fourth grade they made a secret club (even though it served no secret purpose) in a clubhouse where the two of them would trade basketball cards. The two friends had made many good times together and could always rely on one another, and now Daniel needed John’s brain to help him (he was always the smartest kid he knew even though he didn’t act like it.)
“C’mon, pick up, pick up” Daniel repeated to himself anxiously. A second later a voice answered, it was John.
“Hello,” came his voice from the receiver. “Hi, John, guess what, Saturday I’m going on a sailboat with my Uncle Rob.”
“Awesome,” John replied with obvious interest.
“I get to bring a friend, can you come? …” then the other line was cut and all Daniel could hear was, Beeeeeeeeep! He hung up and dialed again. Once again John answered. “What happened, did you hang up?” “No, I thought you did” replied Daniel. “Well, what were you saying…” once again the line was cut off but instead of a beeeeeep, he heard something very different, something very strange, something that made him as his hand tightly gripped the phone. Daniel first heard someone breathing heavily.
Then in a deep whisper he heard a voice say, “Daniel Karr…come.” Daniel screamed and slammed the phone down into its holder. There was no doubt, it wasn’t John. After that he wouldn’t call back again.
The next morning there was a knock at the door, Daniel answered it immediately and a tall boy with brown eyes, black hair a red Polo T-shirt and glasses came in, it was John.
“Sorry I didn’t tell you I was coming, but, after what happened the phone last night I didn’t want to take any chances” he said apologetically.
“That’s all right,” Daniel said as he decided to himself that he wouldn’t mention the voice he’d heard last nigh at least not then.
“What was it about sailboat ride you were talking about?” asked John.
“Well, my family is going on a sailboat ride and I’m allowed to take a friend, and that’s you, of course.”
“Sweet!” said John.
Then Daniel spoke again keeping his voice low so, he would not wake his mother or sister, “But the thing is; I was thinking about my report we have to do, and I don’t know anything about my dad’s side, so I went on the internet and found this…” he held out the paper that contained the story of his father’s disappearance. He had printed it out last night.
John took the papers and by the time he finished reading it his eyes were blown wide open in shock.
“That just doesn’t seem right, though,” John said, “That’s so weird!”
“Yeah, I thought so too, so I need you to help me get to the bottom of this, and I’m sure we’ll be able to find something on his sailboat tonight… well, technically it’s my great-uncle’s boat”
“You could ask your uncle about what he knows,” John suggested.
“Yeah I’ll do that.”
John stayed over at his house where they played video games, until Daniel’s mom kicked them outside and they played one on one basketball.
When it was about noon they got ready to leave for Kleegar Harbor. Everyone piled into the car and they left.
Once they were on the open road Daniel said to John “After I called your house last night did you check your phone to see if there was anything wrong with it?”
“Yeah, it seemed just fine, why?” asked John.
“Well, I’m not so sure it was either of our phones,’ because I saw my mom using our phone after, and there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with it” said Daniel.
“Daniel, phones don’t always work perfectly, this stuff happens all the time.”
“I don’t know, but something tells me it wasn’t a mistake.”
“What makes you say that?”
“I’ll tell you later.”
He wasn’t going to tell John about the voice just yet.
Daniel kept having this feeling that something wasn’t right, because the same thought always popped into his head, Could any of this be related to the Karrkaroe? No! He’d tell himself, how could that be. Now he was going a little too far. But then another thought sprang into his head as he thought of the voice that came from the phone.
“Would it be possible for someone to tap into our phone line and disconnect it,” he asked. “Well, tapping into a phone signal is very hard to do, and it’s illegal,” replied John. “Unless some spy organization was trying to listen in on our conversation, realized they had the wrong number, and got so angry they disconnected our line.”
Daniel smiled and said, “That’s a mouthful.” They both began to laugh.
