Chapter 1 My Strange Dreams Are Getting Stranger
Mom and Dad were yelling at each other. Dad’s loud voice rang out and
shook the house. Ashley was gone. I don’t know where exactly I was.
Mom’s high pitched mouse-like voice shrieked back at Dad.
I sat up in bed for the 10th time. Drenched in sweat. There were no
windows down in the basement so the heat would sometimes be
unbearable! AND I couldn’t tell what time it was, no clock either. It
might’ve been 12:00 (midnight) or something. That’s what time it had
been all the other nights. It was the 10th day. The Last day. The day the
dream would come true. The day I would be dreading a new dream to
come.
You’re probably a little confused. Let me explain. Strange things began
to happen when I was about 9 ½. I kept having The Dreams. Some were
about me flunking my Home-schooled Math Tests, some were about my
sister and I getting in trouble, little Dreams like that, but I would have
them over and over and over. 10 times. And on the 11th day, they would
come True! When I was 10, it wasn’t so bad. It only would happen about
25% of the time. Then when I turned 11 I would have them 45% of the
time, 12 - 65% of the time, 13 - 85% of the time, and now, now I have
them 95% of the time! Only about 10 dreams out of the whole year
wouldn’t come True. I knew I was different, I just couldn’t tell my
Parents, what if they didn’t believe me? So, instead, I told Ernie, and HE
believed me. And lately, my Dreams, have been getting worse.
I got up and stretched. ‘Oh well.’ I thought. ‘It was dark outside in my
Dream so I’ll have to wait until night time for the Dream to come true.’ I
pulled on my sweat-shirt and walked up the stairs. I walked down the
hallway and looked out the window.
Darkness. . .
My face was sweaty. ‘What time is it?’ I asked myself. I prayed that Mom
and Dad were still in bed. They weren’t. (Of course!) I heard someone in
the kitchen. ‘It could always be Ashley.’ I thought. I stopped by the
kitchen wall and peered over into the kitchen. Mom was at the table,
drink in hand and Dad was rummaging through the fridge. ‘Leave
Nathan!’ I commanded myself. ‘What’s the use? I already know what’s
going to happen.’
Dad got a drink and sat down facing Mom. “Listen Sara, I know a lot of
things have been going on, Nathaniel always so tense, I’m always going
on meetings-” I couldn’t bare to listen any longer. I covered my ears and
ran downstairs. It was only until the shouting started and I heard my
sister’s door from above me to the left open. ‘She wasn’t in the Dream.’ I
hopped out of bed and ran upstairs. ‘*Wham!*’ Ashley and I bumped
heads. ‘That DEFINITELY not in the Dream!’ I said rubbing my head.
“What did you say, Nathan? Were you apologizing?” Ashley asked while
rubbing her head.
“Uhhh, no. I didn’t say anything. Do you know what’s going on?” I
asked as if I had no idea.
“No, I just heard their shouting.” She said.
“Sounds like they’re in the kitchen.” I told her as we entered the kitchen.
“Ashley? Nathaniel? What are you two doing up at this hour?” Mom
asked pushing the hair out of her eyes. Dad rubbed the back of his neck
nervously.
“We, ummm, heard you shouting.” Ashley said.
“Oh. Well, you’re mother and I were just chatting, nothing to worry
about.”
“No, you weren’t ‘Chatting’ you were shouting, why don’t you just tell us
what’s going on?! We could HELP you!” I said to them.
“There are some things that can’t be helped.” Mom said sadly putting
her head down.
Ashley and I both frowned. “Well maybe if you gave us a chance-”
“You can do nothing.” Dad said not looking us in the eyes.
“Come on Nathan, lets go.” Ashley grabbed my shoulder and lead me
away.
About 4 hours later (about 8:00am) I was dressed and ready for a new
day. ‘Well,’ I thought, ‘at least I don’t have to worry about a Dream
happening any time soon.’ I put the rest of my toast down. “I’m going to
the Coyote Shack.” I said to no one in-particular.
“Okay, I’ll tell Mom or Dad.” Ashley said as she walked down the
hallway and past the kitchen.
See, sometimes, Ashley can be the biggest pain in the world (and I’m
sure she says the same about me) but sometimes, especially when she has
a BF who right now is a dude named Rick, who is okay, she is pretty
nice.
I spotted the wooden Shack between two rocks.
That’s the Coyote Shack. There’s also the Eagle Shack and the
Mountain-Lion Shack.
The Coyote Shack is based between two rocks, one way two protect both
you and the shack from high winds and a way to have fun. There’s a T.V.
in the shack and I can climb up on one of the rocks, jump down onto the
top of the roof and draw hieroglyphs. Then I drop down into the shack
from a trap door in on top.
In the Eagle Shack there’s a T.V. and a huge tree (well huge for the
Desert) is right behind the shack. I climb up on the shack (it’s a little
smaller than the Coyote Shack so I can climb it) and then climb up into
the tree. There’s a old abandoned Eagle’s nest in it and sometimes I sit
right next to it on the branch and act as if I’m the Daddy Eagle, watching
over my nest.
In the Mountain-Lion Shack there is an X-box and it’s basically in the
middle of nowhere. Except there is the power line to help me find my
way back to the house.
I opened the Front Door and made myself at home. I turned the T.V. to
channel 2. ‘Ghost Whisperer’ was on.
“YES! I LOVE this show!” I yelled. This series was about Ghost Bride
who was dead (obviously) and still loved her ALIVE husband and he was
getting married to another woman. By the time it was over I was
beginning to fall into a deep, deep sleep.
I walked inside the house. I was walking around in circles, going into all
the rooms over and over. No one was there, something told me that Mom
and Dad were gone, FOREVER! I turned a corner. Standing in front of
me was a dark shadow, a shadow with two gleaming teeth! I ran all the
way to the Coyote Shack, opened the door and- woke up.
I was drenched in sweat, like always. “WHOA!” I cried. “That was
weird! I’ve never had 2 Dreams in one day before!” I said out loud. “That
must be one of the ones that won’t come true, it was too weird.” I
decided. I stretched out and switched off the T.V.. “I better get back.” I
looked at my wrist watch. 12:00 noon. “Yeah, they’re probably worried
already.”
