It was just a boring, normal day. I was on my way to school, going over my social studies flashcards, when I smelled something terrible that made my nose wrinkle. It was strong, and I didn't know where it was coming from. I wanted to say something, but being my 12-year-old self, I didn’t. I went back to what I was doing, thinking that it was no big deal.

A minute after I had smelled it, my mom lost control of the car which swerved and went off the road. Memories of my family and friends danced in front of my eyes. My flashcards flew out of my hands. All I could hear were the screams of my mother, the beating of my own heart, and the thunk of the car as it sped over bumps and potholes in the road. It’s funny how one day you could be waking up to go to school and have a social studies test, but then something happens that changes your life forever.
