Prologue:

It was the same old day, with nothing to do except to go to school. I was on my way there going over my social studies flashcards, when I smelled something terrible that made my nose wrinkle up. It was strong, and I didn't know where it was coming from. I wanted to say something, but being my 12-year-old self, I didn’t think anything was wrong so I didn't say anything. I went back to what I was doing, thinking that it was no big deal. That maybe something had died on the side of the road.

A minute after I had smelled it, my mom lost control of the car which swerved and went off the road. Memories of my family and friends danced in front of my eyes, just like the dar danced off the road and into the tall grass. My flashcards flew out of my hands. All I could hear were the screams of my mother, the beating of my own heart, and the thunk of the car as it flew back onto the road and sped over bumps and potholes. It’s strange how one day you could be waking up to go to school and have a social studies test, but then something happens that changes your life forever.
