in The heights

All alone sitting comfortably in your chair

Doors closed to keep out of the biting chill of the day

Ice creeping up on your windowpane

Cold penetrating through to your bones the moment you step outside

But for you are safe and warm with the silence wrapped around you like a blanket

Opening the book and pretending that you are not alone

That you are not feeling so isolated

Suddenly the dull ache of reality is replaced by the whimiscal feeling of being somewhere else

Far from the mundane and the routine and the overthinking

The black and gray are gradually replaced by screaming color

Everything springing to life around you

You feel the breeze on your face

But you don't care because you can do anything

So absorbed you forget about the world

Giddy and lost in the magic of being someone else for a moment

Joy and despair

Pain and healing

Confusion and clarity

Rise and fall as you lose yourself in the twists and turns

Ideas and epiphany as you imagine the words on the tip of your tongue

Your eyes darting across the page

Hungry for more

A brave knight, riding into battle on a gallant steed

A vampire, tragically romanced by a human

A lover, thinking only of one person and knowing they feel the same

A monarch, authoritative and powerful

You can be anything, go anywhere

Your eyes are open and a smile comes to your face even if you don't notice

For one moment the world is a beautiful, fascinating place

Like a delicate but breath-taking crystal shining every shade of the rainbow

You hold it in your hands

But like a fragile gem

It shatters

Leaving you with the broken pieces as you close the page

Seeing again the world you escaped from

The colors fading as you realize where you are

Who you are

But you are not alone

Not when you can dream

This perfectly sums up how I

This perfectly sums up how I feel when reading, including the disappointment at the end when it all fades and I'm stuck right where I was.

Beautiful poem-- my only CC is that the bit about the businessperson seems a tiny bit out of place. The other examples are a lot more whimsical.

Really good job!
