Chapter 21

The pain was in her shoulders now. Steve was grinning as he watched her agony. Suddenly it stopped. Ember looked up. Steve was a pile of ash, and flame was holding the crystal. He gave it to her.

 

“Dad!”

 

“Ember... I am so sorry.”

 

“It’s okay.”

 

They hugged.

“Dad?” said Ember. “Can fate crystals be detached? Mine has served it’s purpose and now it’s just a pain.”

 

“I think so.”

 

“You know what I think?”

 

“No, what?”

 

“I think you should just give the snake people the diamond.”

 

“What?!”

 

“All this fighting, for a diamond? Is it worth it?”

 

“I guess you’re right.”
