The sky was beautiful. It was as if someone had taken a purple and green brush and stroked a smooth, rich blue canvas with fluid motions of the wrist, here dabbling a little red, here a bright aquamarine, washing it over the surface and wiping it off again. The snowy mountains, usually pale with pristine snow, showed up dark against the horizon of dancing lights. Now the dancing flames looked like bluish pink fire, flickering across the sky

“It’s worth it, isn’t it Solstace?” The dark gray wolf turned his leaf-green eyes on his sister, who was an even darker shade of gray, but looked lighter because of the tawny dots that speckled a large tear-drop shaped patch on her back.
Solstice didn't answer, but dragged her large eyes away from the sight and looked back at her brother. Equinox found himself looking into the deep violet gaze that he had known since his birth.
Equinox remembered now, when his mother had taken him and his sister to the wolf-prophet. He had examined Solstace’s markings and proclaimed “This is the wolf we have been waiting for. This is the one that can now go and retrieve the AmberStone, but first she will have to overcome many dangers. The AmberStone is beyond where any of you know. There shall be one, and only one, who will take her. Who will step forward?” There were surely many who would have wanted to be the one. Solstice was the prettiest one in the group, but Equinox knew the young wolves, not seeing anything beyond her shallow beauty. Equinox had thought quickly, and had leaped forward before any wolf could stop him. He had pressed next to his shy sister, allowing her to take comfort in his thick fur. “Very well, you shall be the one, but not yet. You must train before your departure. Equinox, you will know when it is time.”
That was three years ago. Now they were almost there, the aurora showed where it was.
To Equinox, the aurora alone was an ample reward to the long journey, the hunger, the fear, even the one attack in which a tiger had clawed him across the back. The flickering, colorful flames in the sky and the joy and excitement in Solstice’s violet eyes was enough for him.
Suddenly Equinox heard a stifled gasp. He turned like a flash. Solstice seemed to be struggling with an enemy, but it was in the shadows and Equinox could not see the attacker. The bright aurora seemed to turn off, leaving the sky an inky black. Equinox ran toward his sister, already leaping to assault the unseen assailant. Something caught him and yanked him back. He turned around and snapped at his attacker. His teeth snapped shut on empty air. Shadows darkened his vision. There were more attackers now, and then he seemed to feel a dark net, pulling him down no matter how much he struggled.
Then suddenly he was clear of whatever was attacking him he bounded forward and fell on his snout. He whiled, ready to face his enemy. He saw dark shadows retreating and realized that the shadows had been attacking him.
He turned to his sister, who was also struggling under a shadow net, straining, eyes shut. But before he could jump forward, Solstice jumped free. She opened her eyes and gazed at him.
Equinox staggered back as if he had been hit. Solstice’s eyes were a shiny black, empty of everything but pure hatred. She rushed him, lowering her head and biting his forepaw. He heard a crunch as a shooting pain ran up his leg. He stumbled back on three legs.
“Solstace…please…”
Solstice jumped forward, teeth going in for the kill. Equinox tried to get out of the way, but stumbled on his wounded paw. He saw Solstice’s black eyes and flashing white teeth with stunning clarity before she landed on him.

A strangled wolf’s cry rose from the white capped hill, and then, a little later, The howl of a wolf that had won a battle.
