a swim with July

in the stars

July, childish and bright,
begs me to join him
in the water.
and when begging does not work,
he turns to taunts.
July brings out the best in me –
the laughter,
and the splashing,
and the love.
I become younger with July light,
my skin burning to its’ natural gold.
he shows me friendship.

and then he shows me drowning.

July brings out the worst in me –
the gasping,
and the freezing,
and the panic.
I become heavier with July wet,
sinking towards the bottom
with stones between my ribs.

I am not sure where I am left.
perhaps somewhere just below the surface,
as July towels off
above me.
