Whispers Of The Sky-Chapter 8 (gut-puncher chapter)
Posted January 5th, 2023 by ElizieAngelina
As we fly to my hometown, I feel worthless.
How could I not save my sister?
The only person she depended on right then and there?
I feel empty.
As the sunset sky blares through the glass, we all huddle in a corner. "Well, we're safe now." Claire says. "Right?"
I say nothing.
Angel replies, "I hope so."
Florence yells, "We've...gotta go back! We've gotta save Akko, Aoi, and Jennifer!"
It's as if the mere mention of Akko's name sets me off.
"No," I say.
Florence's neck tilts. "Yumi? What's wrong?"
I sit up.
Walk into the center.
"There's no point," I say. "My sister is gone."
Florence shakes her head. "Nuh-uh! There is a point! Right?"
My anger begins rearing its ugly head. "No. There isn't. Florence, stop."
Florence's face becomes more confused. I get angrier by the second.
"But there is! Isn't there! We've gotta save them!"
I have no control anymore. My mind is jumbled.
"N-No!" Florence says. "We've gotta save them! Akko, Aoi, and J-"
"Shut up!" I scream.
Finally, I snap back to conciousness.
What did I just say?
To my own friend?
But even still, the words pour out of my mouth. Like a waterfall.
"There is no point! Don't you get it?! My sister is gone! She's gone! All of my years with her. Gone! Aoi and Jennifer aren't any safer. There's no point! None whatsoever!"
Florence looks scared.
"We cannot save them! I couldn't save them!"
I look at the faces of the Guardians.
"They couldn't save them!"
I look back at Florence.
"NO! WE'RE NOT GOING BACK THERE! AKKO WAS MY LAST HOPE! SO JUST..."
I scream one more time, my voice especially loud.
"STOP IT! SHUT UP!"
Tears stream out of Florence's eyes.
What have I done?
I tremble with depression, rage, and anger.
Florence collapses to the ground, sobbing.
"W-why, Yumi? WHY?"
I whirl back, still maddened. "I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO-"
Florence's face is twisted in a way that's unnatural. "NO, YUMI! I TRUSTED YOU! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I HOPED YOU WOULDN'T-"
Florence inhales and exhales. "DO THIS! YOU DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO SAVE YOUR SISTER! THERE WAS NO EFFORT THERE! NEVER ONCE DID I SEE YOU PUT YOURSELF ON THE PLATE! YOU CAN'T JUST PRETEND YOU CARE NOW! YOU DIDN'T SAVE AOI! YOU DIDN'T SAVE JENNIFER! WHAT KIND OF PERSON ARE YOU?!"
Her words ring inside my brain.
What kind of person are you?
What person am I?
"IF YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO PUT YOURSELF IN THAT PLACE...WHERE YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN...SAVING US..."
Florence sobs angrily.
In a way I've never heard before.
"THEN IT'S USELESS TO BE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU!"
It goes quiet again.
I feel worthless.
I didn't do anything.
Florence is right, yet again.
Florence breathes heavily, before breaking into sobs and running off.
I collapse to the floor like a child, my cries weakened and pained.
Our friendship is over.
All because of me.
After we go back to our apartment in Los Angeles, something is clearly wrong with the group.
I hear Angel crying in her room sometimes.
I already know what's wrong with me.
Claire is acting the same way she did before she cut her hair.
Florence barely comes out of her room.
Alyssa and Layla have no motivation anymore.
We're on the brink of disbanding. I can feel it.
And just when I think things can't get any worse,
And it happened with merely one thing-
a knock at my door. It's Angel. "Yumi," she says. "Follow me to the living room."
Her normally composed voice is trembling.
We all walk to the living room, feeling pathetic.
As soon as we sit, Angel sighs, tears forming in her pink eyes. "I didn't want to have to tell you this."
We all look at each other. "What?"
As a tear cascades down Angel's face, she says, "With the disappearance of Akko, Aoi, Jennifer, and the argument between Yumi and Florence, I frankly don't see any reason why there's even..." Angel takes a minute and stops talking. "...Why there's even any reason to keep our group going."
Claire's neck bounces up. "Wait. That means...that means..."
Angel nods. "Yes. We will be disbanding."
Claire says nothing.
Florence lets out a quiet sob, tired of everything.
Alyssa and Layla clamp hands, but say nothing.
"What will t-this do?" Claire mumbles. "Will we m-move out?"
Angel shakes her head. "No. We'll stay here, just as a group."
Alyssa softly says, "So I guess this is it, huh?"
Angel bites her lip. "I wish I didn't have to put it that way, but..."
I interrupt, "In short, pretty much."
Alyssa closes her eyes forcefully. Tears are making their way down her face.
"It doesn't look like there's any way to defeat the creature. If the wires are uncuttable, and screams won't have any effect, then..." Angel opens her eyes. "The creatures will make their way to the European continent. From there, they will spread to Africa and Asia. The African creatures will go to South America and rest in Central America. The Asian ones, meanwhile...will hit the West Coast and therefore..." Angel stops and sniffles.
I put my face into my hands.
"From now on, you will live as normal," Angel says. "You will experience the effects of growing up, and you will, in no time, begin to grow out your hair."
Angel puts her wand's spell on us, and she twirls it in a circle before stopping.
"You are no longer Guardians," she says.
Because of me.
