A Book Review by Simon Ilincev
Story Thieves, written by bestselling author James Riley, is a truly captivating book. It tells the story of a middle school boy who lives out his life with boring homework and chores, with the only thing enlightening his days the books that he reads, especially the Kiel Gnomenfoot series. But one day he sees a classmate jump into a book! When she comes out she is horrified that she was found. The secret can't be let out.
Bethany, the half-fictional girl, is always jumping through books looking for her long lost father. She convinces Owen, the boy, to not tell anyone about her. But under one condition: Bethany must bring Owen to the last Kiel Gnomenfoot book. Word was out that in the next book one of the main characters was going to die, but Owen wanted to save him! Unfortanately, things go awry when Owen disregards Bethany's rules to not talk or show himself to anybody. And they get even worse when the great magician learns that all of his life working for his kingdom has been six children's books, and a fiction. He is seething and invades the real world...
Meanwhile, Owen has his life threatened multiple times as the main character, Kiel Gnomenfoot, while the real Kiel is performing magic in the nonfictious realm...
A “clever opener likely to leave readers breathless both with laughter and anticipation” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) is the first in the New York Times bestselling series from the author of the Half Upon a Time trilogy (another one of my favorites, I recommend as well).
