Labels

Idk if this has been discussed before, but obviously there are a lot of these labels (punk, emo, goth, prep, jock, nerd, geek, scene, etc) and I was wondering what you guys' thoughts were on this kind of thing. I mean obviously some of them extend to music taste, clothing choice, etc, so.... :) and obviously there is the issue of clique related bullying in some schools, i guess... so... let the conversation BEGIN!

It depends on the type. Labels that can be discouraging (geek is a good one.) aren't good, but ones that are obvious aren't (writer maybe.:)) And of course labels you give yourself (bookworm in my case) are fine. That's just my opinion. :D

Yeah, I totally agree. c: (of course, some people LIKE to be called 'geeks'/'nerds'/other typically discouraging ones, but that's a different matter)

I'm considered "That new girl" and "Oh, she's in a few of my classes. She's quiet, I guess. But smart."
You don't know just how many people have come to me for English help.
Can you tell me how you got this answer?
Can you tell me your secret?

I never thought that my new school divided between kids in such a cliquey way.
There are the popular girls, separated into different groups depending on their classes and friends.
The annoying but popular boys, who are all pretty much bunched together.
Loners, who just roam by themselves.
Averages, like me, who have a couple of friends, but whatever.

Me and my friends are self-proclaimed weirdos. There's a boy Zisbabob(obviously fake name) who is considered annoying by the rest but my friends and I can stand him and have become immune! (We're also the only group of girls who are friends/hang out with boys at recess.) Weirdo=me.

Labels aren't always all bad as long as everyone is okay with how they're labeled. I personally would have no problem being labeled as bookworm or geek or loser because I personally just don't care c:
However, labels we get involuntarily can be extremely inconvenient. I'm often labeled as smart because I'm "gifted", as it's called in most situations, meaning in group projects, I usually end up doing all of the work. "Oh but Lena you're gifted it's no problem for you right?" :/

This is pretty much me.
I get stuck with useless partners who end up making me work five people's worth and either help me a little or give it all to me.
Like once we had this Aztec play where we needed to write a whole script and make props and whatever, but I got stuck with five people, two who are very annoying, and three who didn't know much English. Also, I had one extra person in the group.
They kept talking, and I had to bribe them with highlighters and stuff to get them on track.
In the end, I ended up making the whole script and making all the props and other stuff we needed.
And we got a pretty good score, which they didn't really deserve.
I can't blame the people who didn't know English, but the two annoying dudes made me pretty frustrated.
And in my new school, I end up taking the project home and work on it at home by myself because "they couldn't be there because they were busy."

I hate it when people who don't know me (other grades) think I'm an idiot because I'm good a sports (because if you're athletic, you OBVIOUSLY can't be clever, too, right? X_X). And then people in my own grade don't think I'm that athletic because I'm in gifted and got the academic award and shtuff (but I also got the MVP for volleyball and the gold medal at 400m in our entire school district...?). So yes. I hate it when people label you as a 'jock', and think you have no brains, or a 'nerd', and think you can't kick a ball.

Omg I totally relate. :/ I'm supposed to be one of the 'smart' ones, which I don't mind sometimes, but I'm often the one who has to do all the work in group situations. All these assumptions just because of labels or stereotypes or whatever are really frustrating at times. Still, I have my friends and I don't really want to be a popular kid or whatever, to be honest. c:

Ah yeah that can be frustrating but it's not really a problem for me because I'm basically the one who is academically smart (getting the academic awards, good grades, whatever) but is really sucky at sport (like I'm one of those people who are bad at every. single. sport. so XD)
