like as opposed to "ohhh i feel soooo bad for you!!!1!111!" (ex: every fucking suicide hotline in the whole fucking world) how about we take some fucking initiative for once

agreed. only most of the time I have no idea what to do/say

but "have you eaten anything lately?" "how's your personal hygiene?" asking questions and helping people help themselves in little ways? Is that what you mean?

no, we all need to be harder on ourselves
instead of cutesy self-care nonsense like blankets and chocolate, we should just try to get our fucking dirty work done when we're able to

i feel like i can agree with this on a level?

because i know for me, whenever i have a bad mental health day, people always tell me to take a break from hw and responsibilities.

but in reality thats just very bad for my grades and for my mental health. in reality, not doig my homework just ENABLES my adhd symptoms and makes things worse. sure, i dont feel that anxiety right now but my ass sure is going to feel it 10x worse by the end of the semester.

and so the real self care would have just been to do the shit that needed to be done.

of course though, there are some people who are working themselves to anxiety and panic attacks and suicide. and self care for them may indeed be to take a break and eat some cake.

i like this discourse. i have been guilty too many times of using the excuse of "self care" to enable bad habits and allow my adhd to worsen

AlgebraAddict 01-10-2017 01:10 AM

Eyy self care!!!
I would It is a generalization to say we ALL a need to be harder on ourselves. As Elliot said, some of us are prone to bad habits and we need to do our homework and whatever else we need to do. Others really do need a blanket and chocolate.

Just personally, because I have mood swings, my self care is different for whatever state I'm in.

tl;dr building study habits then being able to go through the motions when emo is helpful

for some reason i'm really good at keeping up with school and stuff when things get Bad. Like the semester before last I could get hw done in between bouts of relapsing lol.

but for me, with school at least, I have this mindset that I'm just gonna take it one step at a time, just get this done, and then keep moving. do your best and that's all you can do. And I think that's really helpful because then I'm not stressing out about school too.

tbh idk how to self-care though, other than like hammocking or spending time with friends lol

SilverMoon 01-10-2017 11:51 AM

i don't need to be harder on myself bc i can't BE any harder on myself I'm already hard on myself

on the other hand nothing matters so lmao why bother

I agree with elliot in that it's different for everyone. There are definitely days where the only thing you can do is take a break and relax even for a small while. And like esther said self care isn't universal . Everyone goes through different things and your self care needs to help YOU
