Colleges

So, I'm going into my freshman year in high school and have already started at colleges that offer the two majors I want to take (I want a dual or double major of architecture and interior design). Is it weird that I'm starting this so early??

lvhamsters 07-10-2014 11:49 PM

I guess that's pretty great that you're starting so early ^^ some colleges offer running start, which I'm doing online next year (although I'm going to be a junior so you're a lot younger) but that's really fortunate that you're able to atart earlier! It will definitely help you in the future and speed everything up :) so don't think of it as a bad thing or weird because it's a great thing to do X3 congrats!

cloudwriter 07-10-2014 11:59 PM

That's awesome! (: At my school, you can do this thing where you go to a nearby college for part of the day and take classes there, then come to the high school and take the rest of your classes. But in order to do that you have to take college entrance tests first, and also it would help if you had your license, so the absolute earliest you can do that is like sophomore year, but most people start their junior year. xD

meerkat 07-11-2014 12:05 AM

I'm also going into freshman year and I have no freakin' idea what I want to do with my life. I'm thinking of doing graphic design or architecture, though. My school doesn't offer college classes, but I'm probably going to have drafting as an elective.
It's okay, my sister's going into 7th grade and she's already started studying for the SAT. O_o She stole MY textbook!

Aynonomus_Angel 07-11-2014 09:53 PM

My school does little academy things so we have lots of options. But my high school doesn't offer the architecture class but our rival school does so I might be able to take the class there in my junior/senior year (either half year or half day). We also do the dual enrollment to go to a nearby college to do part time classes there. Its a huge school with super smart people.

I'm on a block schedule with it so we have four classes first semester and four second semester so I get to take two math classes (geometry and Algebra 2 with trig (I did algebra 1 in 8th grade)).

WOO!! I could even graduate early (without the architecture class at the rival school).

pluzzle 07-12-2014 04:31 AM

idk what freshman and stuff is but im going into my 2nd semester of yr 8 on monday. we dont do college stuff at all btu we do work experience ofc.

im going to do law hopefully

EmmaR 07-12-2014 03:06 PM

Yo don't think about college stuff freshman year. It creates unnecessary stress and if you decide what you want to do with your life before you've really started high school it makes it so it's harder to be flexible later, when you're actually choosing schools.
For example, before freshman year I was planning on doing orchestra for 4 years and specializing in viola, but now I'm probably gonna drop orchestra and specialize in drama. If that's the amount of change that can happen in one year, imagine the amount of change that can happen in four!

Aynonomus_Angel 07-12-2014 06:36 PM

pluzzle, Freshman year is ninth grade in America, the british equivalent to Year 10.

this is harder if ur not american because you have to pick subjects for the rest of ur highschool in yr 8/9. not literally but if you pick french, you have to stay with french, you cant switch to japanese etc. im about to pick mine. you kinda have to decide what you want to do now so you can pick subjects.
but i see where you're coming from yo.
living where i do is sad because we do OP testing for year 12 and it's put on a bell curve and my grade just happens to have less intelligent people in it. so im not gonna get a good enough OP mark so ill probably end up changing schools anyway im rambling now

I hope I get into a law school.

Arin 07-27-2014 11:04 PM

tbh i'm anxious and scared of the idea of going off to college. i mean i'm going into 8th grade so you could say i have a lot of time to think about it but i'm already really subconscious. i have this giant flipping sat textbook and i've taken psat twice. it's just so stressful and i feel like just breaking down but i want to go to a good school ;_;

meerkat 07-27-2014 11:19 PM

I'm going into freshman year at highschool and I'm already scared.
I'm bad at math. Like, stinkingly bad. I've never gotten more than a B, and my parents expect me to be some sort of engineer or programmer.
I have no clue what I'm good at and everyone else has their life planned out to the year but I'm just like "I wanna be unicorn when I grow up!"
OH GOSH I'M SO SCARED

I'm really scared too.
What if I have to go to a sucky college?
What if I fail math? (I suck at it)
What if?

cloudwriter 07-28-2014 07:23 PM

Hey. Everyone who's going to be a freshman next year. Seriously, don't worry.
I'm going to be a sophomore this year. Last year, I was absolutely terrified (but also excited) to start my freshman year. But really, freshman year is a blast. Enjoy high school while you can. And don't worry about math-- whether you're doing Algebra 1 or Geometry, neither are very hard. I took Geometry last year since I'm in the advanced program, and I actually enjoyed most of Geometry. I personally find it pretty easy. It's mostly stuff like if you have this right triangle and one angle is 2x and another angle is 90 and find the measure of the third angle which is x (2x+x+90=180; 3x= 90; x= 30) Then you can check that by just plugging x into the angles and making sure it adds up to 180.

Anyways, I'm rambling. Freshman year is amazing. Enjoy it, because high school goes by faster than you think.

cloudwriter 07-28-2014 07:25 PM

Also about life I really don't know what I want to do anymore
I kinda want to do something with writing still, like a book editor or a newspaper editor (preferably book but hey I'll take what I can get)
But I'm also starting to like science
like what is this

What's the social life like in freshman? I'm starting high school next year, and I'm not that nervous about the classes (I'm really excited that they'll be more interesting, and I'm in Academic in all of them– I think that's the Canadian equivalent of advanced programs...?), but my social life has always been... well, nonexistent. Any advice?

ahhh my advice… just like push yourself. Make yourself talk to people you think seem cool. Try to hang out after school a bit, maybe ask them if they wanna hang out sometime.

My parents are making me take precalc. Not so easy anymore, is it?! D:
For us, Algebra 1 in eighth grade is the normal program (so that's Geometry in freshman year), and Geometry in eighth grade is advanced (I did this). So technically I should be taking Algebra 2 next year, but with Indian overachiever parents like mine, I HAVE to take an honors class in my friggin' freshman year.

CosmoCat 07-29-2014 12:25 PM

i feel so old...i guess i'll eventually end up revealing a lot about myself over the internet, but not yet

I'm actually the same way. Cliches are huge in high school. Get involved in any way you can. For example, the band kids usually become really good friends, same with color guard, choir, drama, etc. It's hard at first, but just be nice/yourself and try and branch out and talk to new people.

Oh wow. Yeah I'm taking Algebra 2 so I don't really know how Pre-Calc is. But I'm sure you'll be fine. :3 They must think you can do it since they're pushing you to take it, so just have faith and do the best you can do ^_^ and good luck :D

i just realized that the active threads on kidpub have gone from middle school problems to high school drama to boyfriends to driving to college

i think i am going to cry

The thing is, I'm not good at math. Maybe I'm a victim of the girls-are-stupid stereotype, or maybe my self esteem sucks. Still, I've never managed more than a B average in middle school math classes (6th grade Pre-Algebra, 7th grade Algebra 1, 8th grade Geometry). So I don't think I'll be able to skip an entire class, especially because I'm already a year ahead. Plus, it's Pre-Calc *HONORS.* Watch me get F's all year round.

Last year in 8th grade for me, I did Algebra 1 which is honors for my school so I'm doing Geometry and Algebra 2 with Trig  because my school is on a block schedule.

Social life as a freshman is basically the same as social life in any other year. My advice is to definitely do stuff that makes you socialize with people outside of your grade, like drama productions or clubs or sports.

Why are you taking Pre-Calc before Algebra II??

Jesus I feel so old. Why. I feel so young in my life but then I get on here and y'all are in middle school. What. I'm only a sophomore.

You guys are lucky, you get to choose what you want to take (I'm guessing) or at least choose to take more advanced classes... In my school, the curriculum is different-- we all take the same classes, up till this year, at least-- I don't know what the coming year will be like. It might be different later on, when I'm in a higher grade, but for now, if I want to learn anything extra, I have to do it in my own time... :c

Haha wow reading this thread made me feel really young. xD I mean I'm going into eighth grade and most of you are already in highschool, and I skipped a grade. So that means I'm a lot younger than a majority of people here.... :/ :P

yay for skipping grades. I actually did two school years in one when I was really little, so people assume I'm a super genius when really it was my mom's responsibility for teaching me that well. idk what year 9 would be, but i'm guessing 7th-9th grade....maybe...never mind, idk

CosmoCat 08-04-2014 07:38 PM

i must be the only person who compares degree completion plans to relax. what the heck, me.

Aynonomus_Angel 08-06-2014 05:41 PM

My school starts early so I'm already in school (even though its only the second day). One of my teachers teaches ACT prep for two blocks and Freshmen composition for the third. Our school is huge, two storeys and like a thousand feet long or whatever. But my choir is nationally recognized and we're going to nationals in the spring and possibly to Prague for internationals, so all of these things might help a little while getting into school.

Crap I'm already stressing about college and I'm a freshman.

But I'm p sure I want to major in civil engineering.

idk. the future is just kind of hard.

And my religion is like "get married have kids" and I get it that's the lifestyle but I don't like thinking about it it scares me.

I shouldn't be trusted to raise a human being honestly.
