Positive + negative= negative (and the other way round)
Negative + negative= positive
For brackets, for example:
20-(7-6)
Now, that's pretty easy, but if you aren't allowed to solve the problem in the brackets first:
There's no sign in front of 7, so it's automatically positive. There's a negative before the bracket, so it's negative+positive=negative. 20-7. Now the six. -6. The minus sign outside the bracket and the minus sign in -6 are two negatives, so it's negative+negative=positive.
20-(7-6)
20-7+6
Both equal to 19
