Aww he sounds really sweet. Be cautious but don't just denounce him because of some rumors. You should listen to what your friends say about him but if it is all in the past tense sometimes you have to make up your mind for yourself.

yikes that's really hard but ovaries before brovaries don't fight with friends over guys or hurt your friend's feelings over a guy it isn't chill and it isn't worth all the drama
i'm kind of confused but my advice is to put your friend before a man maybe if you feel really strongly talk to her about it and see if she's cool with you going after him idk.
