How do I write about an autistic character and not feel like I'm insulting a billion trillion people

I'm trying to write about him in the least vague way because I'm afraid someone will be offended when I post it
Thus making him a pointless character

What do I do

Do your research. Do you know anyone who is autistic? Go and talk to them and find out how they act to make your character realistic. And if you don't know any, do some research in books or on the internet.

Good advice, thank you

The character is apathetic, quiet, rarely ever talks. He's easily distracted. It's hard for me to write about him because I feel like I'm portraying autistic people everywhere, even the high functioning ones, which I'm not.

His description is really bugging me. "He's an elephantine man with a paused expression and an awkward stride. A doughy head rests in the middle of wide shoulders." The other characters in the book see him as sort of dumb.

I feel so guilty writing about him. As if I'm committing some crime. It's like writing about an autistic villain.

You could talk to me.
Me, being, you know, autistic.

I can help you make him more realistic, if you want.
