The Febraury 2013 writing contest looked for the killer first paragraph...the one that screams READ THE REST! to the unsuspecting person holding the book. While every single entry had us on the edge of our chair, here are three openers that the KidPub judges wished had, as Paul Harvey loved to say, the rest of the story...
Winner, $50 Amazon Gift Card: Bubbles
As a foreign scream escapes my throat, and a tear blurs my vision I don't let go. I can't let go. As our eyes meet, hers filled with fear and defeat, mine persistence. Her nails dig into my skin and I feel it rip apart slowly. My eyes leave hers and stare down into the pit of darkness. Her fate. Her prophecy I am keeping her from. Screams of death and pain crawl into my ears. My grip lessens as their alluring persuasive voices seduce me. She cries my name. But its only a mumble in my hears. Louder she screams in pain my eyes meet hers sweat surrounds her face and blood leaks from her wrist. Tears clog my eyes, not leaving. Just there. And like a huge weight they escape my eyes and hit her face. She screams one last time. A scream of her prophecy being fulfilled. I open my mouth. But no noise leaves. It doesn't dare to. For fear. As her sweat loosens my grip and the blood travels down her arm touching her face. I smile. I smile because that is all I can do. I can't frown. Because that will bring more sorrow than what should be. So I smile, as one last tear escapes my eye. And she smiles as she lets go of my hand. And is engulfed by the darkness that forever awaited her.
Runner-up under 12, $25 Amazon Gift Card: BriannaH
My father, Nico Swan, lurked in the shadows beneath the tree I was hiding in, waiting for me to come down. I knew he was there, for he didn't know how to fully hide himself. However, he was very good at acting, and he often used this talent to get to know others and then kill them. My father wouldn't have ever gotten caught, had I not reported him each time. Now, he's here to get his revenge for all seven times I got him arrested. By killing me.
Runner-up 12 and older, $25 Amazon Gift Card: Ember
The wind danced across the field, rippling the grass waves. For a moment, the city was silent in the gloom, and nothing could disturb it. A lone girl stood in the grass, feeling their gentle stalks grasping at her ankles. Her hair swirled in the laughter of the wind, brilliant blue eyes ablaze with a gentle fire. It was all for her, and for a moment, the world was hers. She was free.
