a poem about a dead soldier from war who is alone under his gravestone

Eternal Solitude

A slab of stone, chiselled and tired,

Solemn and deserted and undesired,

As the wind whistled through his numerous cracks

He shivered and quivered; now, perhaps

Wishing for a gale that would make him fall,

So the ones he missed, he would no longer recall,

The grass below stroked his feet,

Summoning, inviting, for him to retreat

Down below, where he slept,

Alone with his efforts to reconnect

Back to the world and his unfinished goals,

The dreams, the struggles and what else, who knows?

Just one more soul amidst all those around,

He called out and cried; making no sound,

Yet cemented within his seemingly lifeless stone

Was an unbroken spirit who waited alone,

The day never came when he would meet

Those he’d left; those who made him complete,

A life was lost, slipping from memories as well,

Like all those who did not receive a righteous farewell…

I love the rhyme scheme of this poem! It flows very smoothly. This is such a sad poem, but it's also very lovely.
