Arsenic, Strawberries, and Cream

in wardly searching

Look for peace where the wood planks creak,

Seek among every mountain peak,

But if a long vigil you keep,

Tendrils will creep between your sleep-

Wisps of the fear that’s so unclear

That little hopes have no home here.

Arsenic, strawberries, and cream-

I swear, there’s poison in the dream.

Look for peace in faces of friends,

You can depend on odds and ends

Cobbled from a conversation

That feeds our imagination.

Terrible things we can recall,

Falls and halls and a great dark pall.

Arsenic, strawberries, and cream-

Who put the poison in the dream?

Anger, a sword, sheath in its hilt,

It is no longer time for guilt.

Action does have its attraction,

Drawing from you a reaction.

Forgiving is a force giving

Another way to try living.

Arsenic, strawberries, and cream-

I sucked the poison from the dream!
