The Romans said Astra inclinant, sed non obligant:
The stars incline us.
They do not bind us.
They do not wrap their bony luminescent fingers around
hearts, souls, minds. They do not Wicked Witch their way
into stories and enchant the endings to shimmer
like they do-- on and off and on and off a million years ago,
transparent in all the ways that matter.
They do not say:
Love him not.
They do not have much hold over us, over me, in short.
in the earth, you feel it. Don't you? I do. Fingers deep in snow,
tracing a foreign map into the core of the planet,
love him love him not go run cry bleed die live decide
and most of all--
Be free but only as free as you want.
Be free but only as free as you are.
Be free but only as free as the destiny you know is yours.
And your destiny, well, she's as free as you know you ought to be.
So, you know. What a regular Gordian knot of things,
of us, of last year, of springtime.
